Rolfing, also known as Rolfing® Structural Integration, is a form of bodywork developed by biochemist Ida P. Rolf, PhD, in the 1940s. The core principle of Rolfing is that manipulating the fascia (connective tissue in the body) can result in lasting changes in chronic pain, movement patterns and posture.

Fascia is a network of connective tissue that holds all of our internal body parts in place. It keeps our organs positioned correctly and surrounds our muscles. Fascia helps stabilize our bones, and it is attached to every muscle, tendon, ligament, bone, and tissue in our body. Repetitive movements, poor posture, inactivity, trauma, dehydration and other factors can lead to the fascia becoming tight and glue-like, restricting movement and impeding blood flow, robbing the muscles of oxygen creating pain in the body and pulling the skeletal system out of balance. Rolfing has a unique focus compared to other bodywork therapies. Kirby utilizes hands, knuckles, elbows to release, to realign, and balance the entire body. The goal is to create more space in the fascia, which helps release tension and free up room within the body.

The strengths of Rolfing lie in its attention to the structure of the skeleton and fascia. Kirby's ability to locate areas of constriction and identify subtle asymmetries can lead to significant results for better freedom of movement, less pain, and improved posture.

What to expect during a Rolfing session

After a comprehensive assessment of your posture and movement, hands-on, deep pressure manipulation of the connective tissue is used to effectively release tension and realign your body. Kirby will adjust the pressure based on your feedback to ensure your comfort. Any soreness you feel afterward is normal and will subside within a few days.

Initial Assessment will consist of thorough consultation and observation of your posture and movements to pinpoint areas of tension and misalignment.

Hands-on Work includes deep pressure applied to manipulate fascia and release restrictions.

Movement Education: You will be guided through specific movements to enhance your mobility and integrate the bodywork.

Potential Sensations: Expect to feel deep stretches and warmth; discomfort may occur but should never be excruciating.

Communication is important, so clearly communicate any discomfort to ensure appropriate adjustments are made.

Attire: It's important to have as much skin exposed as possible during your session, so you'll want to wear clothing that allows for easy access to your body, such as a tube top, yoga shorts, a swimsuit, or bra & underwear (no sports bra).
